Happy Birthday to The Phoenix

The Phoenix Comic celebrates its 5th Birthday

The Youth Libraries Group North West is delighted to offer its congratulations to The Phoenix comic on reaching its 5th Birthday.  The 32 page weekly comic launched in January 2012.  It has been published at a time when printed comics in the UK have suffered a serious decline from the Halcyon days of the Dc Thomson and Co and Fleetway Publications glory days when newsagent shelves would bulge with copies of Oink, Buster, Bunty, The Beano, Mandy, The Dandy, Whizzer and Chips and many more.

Comics play a valuable role in helping children not only to read but to love reading, the high visual content lends an immediacy that is often able to hook less confident or keen readers, sweeping them along in story and action.  One area where The Phoenix has excelled is in bringing together some of the best and most loved storytellers from children’s books: Philip Pullman, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Morpurgo and many more…

In October 2015, The Phoenix became the first independent comic in the UK to reach its 200th issue since 1969, an issue marked with a special cover illustrated by current Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell.

The stories have proven so popular that they have been published as single titles in bind up form, The Phoenix Presents.  The brilliant and informative Corpse Talk by Adam Murphy, a comic strip based on a chat-show with the dearly departed, became the first comic to make the Blue Peter Best Book with Facts award.  Star Cat by James Turner won the British Young People’s Comic Award in 2015, an accomplishment which Lost Tales by Adam Murphy was to repeat in 2016.  This has gone on to be the first comic to be featured on the Blue Peter Best Story award shortlist in 2017 showing the success model looks all set to continue.

We are delighted to wish The Phoenix a very Happy Birthday and if you’ll excuse us, we have to settle down now for some comic reading…
